EAM 101
Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) is Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) on steroids. It basically involves managing and tracking everything that occurs to assets from cradle to grave. It includes performing scheduled maintenance on assets according to frequencies that are economically viable for the organization. The objective of EAM is to maximize asset performance, asset life and minimize asset-related operating costs. The word "enterprise" refers to the management of assets across departments, locations, facilities and, in some cases, business units. With improvements in web based application technology and internet bandwidth, CMMS, previously limited to local installs on maintenance department computers, has become overshadowed by EAM. EAM makes it possible for virtually anyone within an organization to see what's going on with the assets of the company.
When you think about it, the industrial revolution began a little over one hundred years ago. That's five, maybe six generations of humans ago. The internet and availability of personal computers in the work place is a little over one generation old. Companies previously relied on skilled craftsmen, engineers and technicians to transfer their knowledge and skills to the next generation via books, publications and any other means available. Today we have data. EAM is designed to serve as the repository of "tribal" knowledge of what makes industry work.
